Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) in Maine

Roadsafe LLC supports municipalities, fabricators, and contractors with local, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) services in Maine and throughout New England. We have experience performing non-destructive testing (NDT) to many standards and on many types of structures.

From Downeast aquaculture operations and small island infrastructure to railcars, shipyards, municipalities, and construction projects throughout Maine, we provide critical nondestructive testing (NDT) services across the Pine Tree State. We help owners, contractors, fabricators, and public agencies verify structural integrity, enhance safety, and support regulatory compliance through accurate thickness testing and weld inspection services.

Common Applications of Thickness Testing (UTT)

Ultrasonic thickness testing (UTT) is often used for measuring wall thickness on pump station structures, water storage tanks, wastewater tanks, pressure vessels and piping, railcars, bobtails and propane tankers, construction and maintenance equipment, ships, and steel boat hulls.

Useful to municipal facilities, metal fabricators, general contractors, heavy truck and railcar repair shops, ship builders, pressure vessel owners and inspectors.

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) in Maine

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) is used to measure material thickness and evaluate wall loss in new and in-service components, including steel tanks, pump stations, pressure vessels, marine hulls, piping systems, and structural steel. This technique helps verify compliance with design and construction specifications while identifying material loss caused by corrosion, erosion, or wear that could impact structural integrity and service life. UTT utilizes pulse-echo ultrasonic sound waves to accurately determine material thickness and requires access to only one side of the component. For optimal results, the test surface should be reasonably smooth and free of loose scale, rust, and flaking coatings to ensure effective transmission of ultrasonic energy. In many applications, measurements can be obtained through thin, well-bonded coatings such as paint or epoxy linings, eliminating the need for coating removal.
