Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) in Vermont

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is commonly used throughout Vermont to inspect welded components and structures including bridges, pressure vessels, MC-330 and MC-331 cargo tanks, and other safety-critical equipment for cracks and discontinuities that could propagate and lead to unsafe conditions. MT is a nondestructive examination method used on ferromagnetic materials to detect surface and near-surface defects such as cracks, laps, seams, and lack of fusion. During the inspection, the component is magnetized and magnetic particles (dry or wet, visible or fluorescent) are applied to the test area. Discontinuities disrupt the magnetic field and create leakage fields that attract the particles, producing visible indications that reveal the location and extent of the defect.
