Weld Inspection and Testing in Vermont

Roadsafe LLC supports municipalities, fabricators, and contractors with local ultrasonic and magnetic particle weld inspection and weld testing services in Vermont and throughout New England. We have experience performing non-destructive testing (NDT) to many standards and on many types of structures.

From crack detection on rural bridges to infrastructure inspections in the state capital, we provide reliable nondestructive testing (NDT) services throughout the Green Mountain State. Our inspections help owners and agencies verify structural integrity, enhance public safety, support regulatory compliance, and extend the service life of critical infrastructure.

Common Applications of Weld Inspection

Ultrasonic weld inspection and magnetic particle testing is used for ensuring compliance of welded connections in pressure vessels, bridges, piers, structural framing, anchor bolts, railcars, bobtails and propane tankers such as MC-330 & MC-331 cargo tanks, construction and maintenance equipment, ships, and steel boat hulls.

Useful to metal fabricators, general contractors, heavy truck and railcar repair shops, ship builders, pressure vessel owners and inspectors, as well as municipal facilities.

Weld Inspection and Weld Testing in Vermont

Ultrasonic Weld Inspection

structural weld testing

Ultrasonic weld inspection (shear wave testing) is used throughout Vermont to examine welds in piping systems, structural steel, bridges, bridge piles, boilers, ships, railcars, and other safety-critical structures for defects that could compromise structural integrity. UT is a nondestructive examination method that uses angled ultrasonic sound waves to inspect welds and the adjacent heat-affected zone (HAZ) for discontinuities such as cracks, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, slag inclusions, and other internal flaws. Reflections from these discontinuities are detected and displayed on an ultrasonic flaw detector, allowing the inspector to locate, characterize, and size indications. To ensure accurate evaluation, the equipment is calibrated using reference standards or calibration blocks made from similar materials and containing known reflectors.

Magnetic Particle Weld Inspection

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is used throughout Vermont to inspect welded components and structures including bridges, pressure vessels, MC-330 and MC-331 cargo tanks, and other safety-critical equipment for cracks and discontinuities that could propagate and lead to unsafe conditions. MT is a nondestructive examination method used on ferromagnetic materials to detect surface and near-surface defects such as cracks, laps, seams, and lack of fusion. During the inspection, the component is magnetized and magnetic particles (dry or wet, visible or fluorescent) are applied to the test area. Discontinuities disrupt the magnetic field and create leakage fields that attract the particles, producing visible indications that reveal the location and extent of the defect.
